SWIEIT Speakers' Visit - Randwick Girls High School, 28 June

On 28 June the SWIEIT Speakers team visited Randwick Girls High School. UTS students Ashwini and Tammy spoke about their experiences as university students and the various influences which lead them to pursue studying engineering and IT. Ashwini outlined the transition she made from high school into the workforce and then to studying engineering. Tammy outlined her influences in choosing a career in IT highlighting that her father was an engineer, her interest in coding at a young age after her friend set up a website and the realisation that she wanted to pursue a career which highlighted and complemented her strengths. Ashwini and Tammy both spoke about how both the engineering and IT fields are very extensive, and open up the opportunity to work in diverse roles.

The SWIEIT Speakers team then ran the Engineers Without Borders activity of Floating Houses. The students learnt that in developing countries such as Cambodia many villages are susceptible to flooding and sanitation problems. The students were then tasked with the activity of developing a structure which floated and could hold weight on a limited budget in essence modelling a floating house. The activity was successful with all students designing unique models.

SWIEIT Speakers’ Visit – Bankstown Senior College, 13 June

On 13 June SWIEIT Speakers Ashwini and Clarisse visited Bankstown Senior College to speak to 25 students in years 10-12. Bankstown Senior College has a unique learning environment for students with a four day school week and no school uniforms. The college predominantly caters to mature age students who come from diverse cultural backgrounds including Arabic, Assyrian, Somali, Vietnamese, Serbian, Kurdish and Chinese.

Ashwini spoke of her initial perceptions about engineering as a career including her pathway from UWS to UTS, experiences studying at University and her future aspirations working in the engineering profession. The students at Bankstown Senior College were a very receptive audience and enthusiastic in asking questions. Clarisse opened up about her experiences since graduating from Information Technology degree program earlier this year and reflected upon her opportunities which included the chance to travel to the Microsoft headquarters in Seattle, USA as part of her job working for the world's richest man - Bill Gates :-)

UTS:IT Undergraduate Courses and Scholarships Information Evening - 11 June 2013 , Register Now

Hi Everyone,

We would love to invite any students in Years 10, 11 or 12, or TAFE students, or anyone wanting to know more about studying IT at university, to an upcoming event we are hosting at our city campus.

UTS:Information Technology are holding an Undergraduate Courses and Scholarships Information Evening to provide IT course and scholarship information to students and parents, and mature-aged individuals or career-changers.

With our practice-based learning model, we are a recognised leader in IT education in Australia. Our links with the IT industry are second to none, with our courses developed in consultation with industry. Our courses are continually being updated to keep pace with the fast moving IT industry and provide a valuable combination of technical knowledge and practical experience. Our graduates go on to diverse roles in every sector of the IT industry in countries around the globe.

Bachelor of Information Technology Co-operative Scholarship - How To Apply

There will be a two round application process for the Bachelor of Information Technology Co-operative Scholarship Program for the 2014 intake. The online application form for round 1 is open now and will close on 21 June 2013.

Undergraduate Mid-year Intake

The Bachelor of Science in IT, Diploma in IT Professional Practice will be offered for the Spring 2013 mid-year intake. Applications can be made through the UAC website.

2014 Undergraduate Intake

The undergraduate courses available for the Autumn (March) 2014 intake are:

• Bachelor of Information Technology;
• Bachelor of Science in IT, Diploma in IT Professional Practice;
• Bachelor of Science in Games Development;
• Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Science in IT;
• Bachelor of Science in IT / Bachelor of Arts in International Studies;
• Bachelor of Science in IT / Bachelor of Laws.

Scholarships

Undergraduate scholarships available to local undergraduate students applying before enrolment are:

SWIEIT Speakers’ Visit – Loreto Normanhurst, 30 May

On 30 May SWIEIT Speakers Ashwini (BEngDipEngPrac) and Harshaa Raha (BEng BBus DipEngPrac) visited Loreto Normanhurst to speak with a cohort of year 10 students. Harshaa spoke about how her interest in engineering developed through her experiences travelling internationally, which lead her to pursue a career in the field. Ashwini outlined the common misconceptions related to the engineering profession and the unconventional path which lead to her studying engineering.

The students at Loreto Normanhurst were a great audience and had some excellent questions for the speakers. The year 10 students were also in the process of making subject selections and the presentations allowed the students to ask questions relating to future university study and the different engineering and IT courses available at UTS. 

 The SWIEIT Speakers team would like to thank Loreto Normanhurst for hosting a school visit. We hope to see you again in 2014.

Lucy Mentoring Launch 2013

On 15 May the Lucy Mentoring Program Launch for 2013 was hosted by Westpac at their offices in Sydney CBD.  The night was an opportunity for student mentees and mentors to meet for the first time and network.  The Program this year has seen a record 48 female Engineering and IT students paired with professional women from over 18 different organisations within the public and private sector. The participating organisations this year include AECOM, Alcatel-Lucent, Avanade, Cisco, Commonwealth Bank, IBM, Mi9, NAB, Nexus Point Solutions, OzForex, PM-Partners, Railcorp, Reserve Bank of Australia, SMEC Australia, Stonebridge Systems, Suncorp, Thiess, UTS and Westpac. 

The night kicked off with Program Director - Women in Engineering and IT,  Bronwyn Holland providing an official welcome to all guests and providing a brief overview of the Lucy Mentoring Program since its inception at UTS in 2010. 

Guests then heard from two inspiring speakers including Tina Conlon, Chief Information Officer, Product & Enterprise Services at Westpac who has over 25 years experience across IT and financial services. Her current responsibilities include enterprise wide technology solutions such as Cards & Domestic payments, Core systems and Corporate systems. Tina outlined her career path which lead to her current role at Westpac. She also provided key career advice and encouraged students to always challenge themselves and to never be complacent.

The second guest speaker for the evening was Emilie Ho, a recent IT graduate from UTS in 2011 and current Westpac Technology Analyst. Emilie self-reflected on her own career path including the transition from high school, selecting IT as her chosen profession and finally to her experience of working at Westpac in her current role.

The night was very enjoyable with students and professionals swapping details before embarking on their five-month mentoring journey between May and October 2013. UTS is very thankful for all involved in the Program and we look forward to further collaborations.

Launch of the UTS Research Equity Initiative - Wed 10 April

Professor Attila Brungs, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, invites you to celebrate the launch of the UTS Research Equity Initiative. 

The UTS Research Equity Initiative, which aims to support researchers with carer responsibilities and to promote gender equity in research at UTS.
Current Higher Degree Research women within the Faculty and senior Bachelor-level students are warmly encouraged to attend.

Guest speaker, Dr Cathy Foley, Chief of the CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering Division and 2013 NSW Woman of the Year, will explore: Research, Families & Careers: can we have it all?

Dr Foley will speak to this topic from her own experience as one of Australia's foremost scientists and mother of two, and will look at what organisations can do to make a positive difference for staff with family responsibilities who wish to pursue their passion for their work, as well as their passion for life.

Dr Ann Reich, a recipient of the new Childcare and Carers Fund (Conference Attendance), which is one of the new programs under the Research Equity Initiative, will speak about the Fund and its impact from her perspective as a UTS Early Career Researcher.
